Module 1 Reflection

This module has made me think about my role as
an instructional designer in the following ways...

6 comments:

  1. the need to be more formal, more specific and thorough/diligent in documenting unit/lesson plans. I tend to drift into a less structured, more "fly by the seat of my pants" mode when time gets tight, and then notice student performance drop somewhat. Because I think it's important to give students choices in our topic of study (I let students brainstorm and vote on their choices at least a couple of times during the year), sometimes I end up with more different topics than I really have time to do justice to planning.

  2. This module has me thinking about several things in regards to my role as instructional designer.

    1. Designing the Essential Questions to promote higher level thinking is always challenging for me. It's an area I constantly have to work on professionally.

    2. I think my strengths as an instructor are developing acivities and resources.

    3. I understand the importance of designing a plan for Project Based Learning, and not just having students simply complete a project. Its important for students to understand why and how it relates to their everyday experiences.

I like the statement in the module: decisions we make determine the curriculum students experience.

  3. Not just as a researcher and a presenter, but also as a questioner. The idea that I need to present information in a way that creates questions as much as answers. These question need to be ones that are answered by way of the projects the students create during independent work. I can't simply answer them all myself. I need to create an environment where the students search for the answers and find unique ways to apply the answers.

  4. As an instructional designer, questions should be a main part of unit plans and should be what the unit is designed around. The main idea I have been thinking about today is what questions to ask that will guide student learning and let them find the answers for themselves. Through the struggle, students can take ownership of their learning and through that long-lasting understanding will take place. Another thought I have is that there does not have to be only one main essential question, but many different questions can belong to one idea. Through these questions, students can learn without me being the only resource of information.

  5. I am very excited about everything I am learning here at Intel. Module 1 has shown me that I will be given the opportunity to create lessons for students and teachers at my school. It will be very educational and allow activities for them to take control and have a purposeful meaning with everything that will be taught. I feel as an Instructional Technology Specialist this advantage of designing activities will make my job much more professional and allow teachers and students to enhance activities that they will be learning and working with. What an awesome way to learn and even more way to enhance instruction and let all participate.

  6. This module has really made me realize the importance of creative curriculum design. I never really considered myself as a curriculum designer until today. I am really looking forward to implementing a project-based approach to my curriculum this year.
