Module 2 Reflection

This module has helped me think about using standards, CFQs, or formative assessment in the following ways…

  1. Module Two helped me think about the importance of the Curriculum Framing Questions and how to better design the questions. I realized after the practice exercise that this is an area I need to improve on professionaly. These questions drive the instruction, therefore, they need careful consideration.
I also realized during module two that I need to reduce the number of standards I am using in my unit plan. I don't want teachers to become overwhemed...and I don't want to become overwhemed with planning for too much.

  2. This module reminded me of the importance of questioning and developing good, solid questions. Before today, I unknowingly relied on "yes" or "no" questions rather than questions that delved into higher-order thinking.

Like Peyton, this module made me realize that I need to improve on writing curriculum framing questions. I agree with her statement, "These questions drive the instruction..." Constructing the Essential Question is still really difficult for me.

  3. Module 2 has changed my entire perspective of questioning techniques not only for students but in conducting activities with my teachers. I now have a better understanding of the importance of the "essential question" and the purpose of what I am trying to accomplish from the questioning techniques that follow, along with designing better questions for unit and content. I also see the importance of "good questioning" rather than just questions to get an answer. This module made me realize the importance of the end result or the assessment that is expected from the students /teachers. WIth various formal assessment components available students/teachers are accountable for their end results making the projects even more reliable.

  4. Though I have been aware of 'backward design' for several years, I’m not very good at writing formal lesson plans that include CFQ’s and detailed assessment plans. Though I do identify and address specific standards, I’m not required to adhere to a specific set or grade level since I teach Enrichment/gifted. I will be more conscientious about writing and identifying CFQ’s, since I realize the importance of using standards and curriculum questions to formulate an assessment plan. I can see that the assessment plan will be the real challenge for me, at least until I’ve practiced with writing them for several units.

  5. The biggest idea that stuck with me from this module was the idea of creating focused questions that connect the content to your students while asking them a broad enough question to inspire them to think. Creating this type of questions for all of the content will be challenging and take practice and revision. But, the power that will be found behind the answers makes the effort and constant improvement well worth it.

  6. It has helped me think about how I use assessments and leading questions to evaluate students work. I see there is a need to adjust my questioning format so that there is no single answer and students must think to answer.
